Configuring WS_FTP

When you open WS_FTP after installing it, you will be presented with a box that allows you to enter the configuration details of the site that you wish to upload your website files to. You should fill it in with details as below. The sections you need to fill in are marked in red.

On the General tab: The Profile Name box is just a title for the connection that you are creating and so can be anything that you like to remind you of what that the profile is about. In the Host address box you should put your own domain name preceded by ftp. eg if the main domain name you own is called yourchosenname.co.uk then you should enter ftp.yourchosenname.co.uk in the box. (If you have many domain names you will need to create many profiles only if they are pointing to different webpages. If they are all pointing to the same set of webpages then you only need to create one profile.) You need to put the login name we give you in the space called User ID, with the password we provide in the Password section. The rest of these fields can be left blank, although if you wish to add a comment about the connection you can put it in the Comment box.

On the Startup tab: The Initial Remote Host Directory should be left blank. You should place the location where your website can be found on your computer on the Initial Local Directory box.

All of the rest of the settings can be left at their defaults (unless you have a firewall and need to use firewall settings). Once all of this has been done click OK to connect to your web space.

Once you have connected, the screen should look something like this:

This shows the files on your own computer on the left hand side of the screen and the files on our server on the right hand side of the screen.

There are two ways of uploading files to your web directory.

  1. The easiest one is to select any files that you want to transfer by selecting them on the display of your computer (left hand half of the window). Click the button which has a right pointing arrow on it (in the middle of the screen) to transfer the files to the web space side (right hand window). You can also transfer directories and their contents in this manner.
  2. The other way is to select and drag files from the list on the left hand window and drop them onto the right hand window. The disadvantage of this is that it doesn't transfer directories.

When you have finished transferring files, terminate the connection with the close button and exit the program by pressing the Exit button.

Please contact WS_FTP if you have any questions on how to use their software. Note that we can only provide support on configuration details. We do not provide support on the actual use of the program.
