Webpages are prepared by you on your own computer or by a professional website designer and then uploaded (copied) to the web space rented. Your pages are then 'hosted' and available to people anywhere in the world. When someone wants to look at your website they use their internet browser to access the webpages you have stored on the server. People find your website quickly and easily by typing in "www.yourchosenname.co.uk".
It is well known that many people surfing the Internet will not wait long for a webpage to download. If it takes more than a few seconds they move on elsewhere. Webspace rented from Headpoint.com allows visitors to your website to quickly access the pages you have loaded there. Our system also makes it quick for you to upload new and revised webpages to the server from your own computer. We provide step-by-step guidance to help you.
The amount of space you need depends on the size and type of webpages you want to display. If you don’t know how much you want we suggest you start with the cheapest package of ten megabytes since this is usually sufficient for first websites. If more space or bandwidth is needed you can add this at a later date.
We have multiple connections to the Internet from high quality backbone providers. We currently have 120 Mb of bandwidth and an additional 60 Mb available "on tap" to cope with future demand.
BT have the largest IP network in the UK. They are our primary bandwidth provider and we currently have a 16 Mb Internet connection with them. This service is delivered on gigabit fibre and is diversely routed to two different BT exchanges on different sides of our data centre. The connection is burstable to 180 Mb at the flick of a switch. While some of our competitors are still using 2 Mb or 8 Mb connections delivered over unreliable copper wires as their primary connections.
Telewest are the UK's largest cable company and provides the network backbone for the mobile phone operator, One2One. Our Telewest connection is delivered over Telewest's own fibre and is completely independent of BT's network.
UUNet are of the larger UK backbone providers and offer excellent service level guarantees to us.
Our internal network is 100% switched running at 100 Mb/s with a fibre backbone connecting our data centre and corporate offices. We use the latest Intel and Cisco switching equipment and routers.

You must not use the webspace for obscene, abusive or defamatory materials or breach the intellectual property rights of any third party. If we find this has occurred the material will be removed and your service cancelled.
Our service offers each customer generous bandwidth (data transfer) of 500 megabytes per month. Most clients never reach this limit but if you need a specialist or high bandwidth account please contact us for details of the various webhosting options we offer. If we find you are exceeding your limit we will get in touch and ask you to restrict your usage or to pay for additional bandwidth.

The Control Panel is an online program that enables you to set up an unlimited number of Email forwarding addresses that you can change whenever you like. It is also used to change your password for uploading (FTP) website files. You will need a separate control panel for each domain name you directly want to control.
Most companies and organisations want emails with different aliases (the part of the email address before the @ sign) forwarded to different departments or people, eg. forwarded to an appropriate member of staff in the sales department, to technical specialists and to the customer support department. The control panel facility enables you to set these aliases to forward Emails to wherever you want, and to change them when necessary. The changes are activated immediately.
The control panel facility also enables you to control the password that is used for uploading (FTP) your webpages to the internet and also to change it when appropriate. It lets you change your control panel password too.

To use ASP.net on your website uses up additional processing power on our servers so we need to charge an additional amount for you to use this of £35 per domain per year. NOTE that ASP is free but ASP.net is not.

To add password protection to your website folders, purchase URL security. URL security will password protect your folders so that you can setup sections only your customers can use eg for private information or downloads. A pop-up box will appear for them to enter their username and password.
If you do not have a personal control panel then we will setup one passworded protected folder and file for you for this price. If you have purchased a control panel you will then be able to setup as many as you want for no extra cost, and whenever you want.
Use a standard text file in your private folder which contain
all the usernames and their passwords which are permitted access to that folder.
Note that the text file takes the form of: username=password. Use one
pair of these per line in the text file with no limit. You can upload new text
files using your FTP program.

SSL (Secured Sockets Layer) is a protocol which encrypts data between the web browser and server. This is especially important for sites such as online shops where customers are asked to enter their credit card details. Typically a normal website sends all these details in "clear text" (no encryption) and it is possible for a third party to "sniff" these details during transmission. SSL cures this problem by encrypting the information with a key which only only the webserver can decrypt. There are various strengths of keys available. The Headpoint SSL server uses 128 bit encryption from Thawte.
Thawte SSL Server Certificates will enable SSL on your website, giving you the ability to communicate securely with your online customers. SSL protects all communications with your customers, so you can take credit card orders, protect sensitive personal information, and ensure that hackers cannot detect your passwords.
Secured URLs can be determined by a padlock ()
at the bottom of the web browser screen. Here, visitors can click this to view
information about the URL they are viewing and confirm that the connection is
secure.
For the sake of efficiency and speed, only put pages which will be used to collect sensitive information onto the SSL server (such as HTML forms). There is a 10Mb quota set per SSL folder.
You would need to use a SSL Credit Card Script that uses ASP, ASP Upload (CIIS 5), CDONTS, iHTML, Perl or Perl MD5. These are the programs that run on our SSL servers. You should confirm with your credit card company the level of security you need to use and also confirm with them any specific security systems you need to implement.
